Derek has worked in Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia providing GIS services ranging from automating map production to designing, developing databases with integration into ArcMap, automating watershed inventory update and modeling processes. He has provided GIS services as project manager on the multi-million dollar Mountain Pine Beetle project for the Wilmore Wilderness Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Derek is a specialist in Wildfire Mapping and has experience in FireSmart operations.
Derek has many years experience in the Natural Resource Management/Forest Protection industry. He also has many years experience in IT/GIS. Derek Gilby brings the ability to determine data quality through analysis of spatial trends, patterns, accuracy, completeness and error, and relay pertinent impacts to users, has an eye for detail and a strong aesthetic sense, along with the creativity to produce products that clearly depict desired information without clutter along with the propensity to think beyond a problem and provide viable options and solutions.
Derek graduated from the Center of Geographic Sciences in Lawrenctown Nova Scotia with an Advanced GIS Diploma in 2005. He attended this school on recommendation from the Maritime Forest Ranger in 1994. In 2002 he obtained Programmer/Network Support Analyst Diploma from CDI College of Business & Technology and is currently working on his Bachelors of Science in Computing and Information Systems.
